Top 10 Confessions of a Pregnant Girl

During this pregnancy there are some things I read and decided to do and not to do. My hope for posting this is to free some ladies from either judging themselves or a friend who has done these things while pregnant. Think me weird or strange but these confessions are me coming clean about not being the perfect pregnant momma you all thought I was :-)

1. I eat raw/undercooked eggs

I love over easy eggs. Seriously. A handful of times early on I made over-easy eggs and felt so bad about it. "what if I get salmonella? What if I get sick and throw up and go into early labor? What if I I die?" I decided that since I need me some protein and started hating scrambled eggs, a solution had to be discovered. I found these amazing eggs called "Safe Eggs" at Sprouts. They are raw but pasteurized eggs still in their shell! I technically could eat them without cooking them at all but that is a little much for me. I would feel like Gaston from Beauty and the Beast. Now I can eat my over easy eggs without fear and with confidence! About every other day I enjoy my runny yolks and smile with glee. Mmmm.

2. I went off-roading
This was NOT my choice. I definitely wouldn't have chosen to go on a off-roading adventure while 7 months pregnant but someone in my family (who shall go unnamed) decided we would go see a a beautiful sunset that was 30 minutes up a mountain. A very hilly and bumpy mountain. I am so thankful that I had my pregnancy belt with me because I used it for support. I sat in the back seat holding either side of the support bars, and bracing myself in a semi squat to lessen the impact.  I survived and the view was beautiful, but I felt like I could have gone to Magic Mountain, gone on every roller coaster, and had the same effect. My baby is fine and I suffered no ill effects, but this is a big pregnancy no-no activity that I definitely did.

3. I can't stay away from the hot tub

I get a lot of looks for this confession. I have craved baths throughout this pregnancy but our tub is too shallow to stay comfortable in while pregnant. My belly sticks out and I need to put a cup of water over it ever minute to stay warm. Blah! I didn't go in a hot tub for the several weeks because of a Mayo Clinic article I read. After that I followed the same article's guidelines and have LOVED each time I have gone in the hot tub! I get out after about 10 minutes or when I start to sweat. However, I have been asked to leave the YMCA hot tub twice.  I checked with the pool manager and he told me that lifeguards are only trained to advise people with medical conditions the risks of remaining in the hot tub, they can't ask them to leave. Stretching and easing sore muscles is a must so I am very glad I decided to do my own research and plop in the j-cuz. Now I smile when the judgement comes and say, "Thanks for your concern".

4. I am obsessed with birth videos.

I think I have watched every home birth video available on youtube.  And, this obsession started before I was pregnant and I wanted to become a doula. After I was pregnant I wanted to normalize the process for myself so I wasn't freaked out when I started mooing like a cow or broke down crying in labor or did something I would later think was embarrassing. My favorite births are the ones that are super raw and real, where the mother has abandoned all "politeness" and she is as primal as it gets. I think it is so beautiful to see someone working so hard, allowing their body to do something that will later amaze them. I also watched a lot of hospital births online. It feels very unnatural to me to birth in a bed where you are pushing your baby uphill, up your sacrum, in a position that makes your hips more narrow. We don't poop lying down, why in the heck would I want to take the biggest "poop" of my life lying down? Birth videos have opened my eyes up to what is normal and HOW women bring their babies into the world.

5. I'm not getting a crib yet

No, our baby is not going to sleep on the floor or in a dresser drawer. He will be in bed with us! I have heard a lot of people tell me they secretly do this but don't tell anyone for fear of judgement. John is very excited to cuddle our son in the mornings and I am excited I won't have to get out of bed to go nurse a screaming baby. The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends that babies sleep in the same room as their parents for AT LEAST the first 6 months, the peak SIDS time, because it is simply less safe to keep them elsewhere. I have read three separate books that all advocate having your baby IN BED, not in a crib or co-sleeper. I am currently reading  The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding by the La Leche League. The authors cite several research studies that not only is it safe to have your baby sleep with you, it actually lowers the risk of SIDS (not to be confused with suffocation). It helps your baby regulate their breathing and heart rate and they rouse more easily, key factors in preventing SIDS. Babies sleep more deeply when they are stressed or when they are formula fed, which might sound amazing but is actually problematic because waking themselves up more frequently to feed is safer. Breastfeeding success is linked to bed-sharing with your baby at an even higher rate than if they are in a co-sleeper. It is important to note that I am not a drug user, we do not smoke, or have pets or other children in bed with us, all of these increase risks for accidents. A friend of mine who sleeps with her baby said "I get WAY more sleep and so does my husband!" SOLD. Read more here if you aren't convinced.

6. I sleep on my back
Another one that is not my choice. I always wake up on my back and have no idea how long I have been there! I freaked out the first few times and then a midwife told me "don't worry about it, you were not created to harm your baby". I always go to sleep on my left side with a massive king-sized pillow between my legs and don't understand why my body tells me to roll over to my back! The only reassurance I have is that when I move our dear son starts playing and kicking so I am assuming he was just fine and was patiently waiting for me to wake up.

7.  I work out hard
Yeah, this one is something a lot of pregnant women have misinformation about. Apparently it was assumed that most women would not be working out as hard as they did before they were pregnant. Doctors put a ban on getting your heart rate over 140 for no good reason.  Not evidence based! One guy told me when I was doing TRX that I would make my baby dizzy. Someone else told me I should take it easy and put my feet up while I can. I have been very mindful of my body and stopped doing CrossFit when my back told me "No thanks Ebey". I always try to make sure I can catch my breath within 10 seconds and can carry on a short convo while exercising. TRX has been amazing because I know all those squats with help me pop my baby out and open up my pelvis. Yoga limbers up all of my ligaments that need to stretch to accommodate the bowling ball that I am going to birth next month. I have had a relatively easy pregnancy and feel really blessed to be able to stay healthy and keep my body feeling great. Working out has played a huge role in making this happen!

8. I am going to do placenta encapsulation.

This one might be the one that takes the cake for the weirdness factor. Let the thoughts come, go ahead, "YOU ARE DOING WHAT?! GROSS!" I've heard it before when I have told people, you aren't the first. I have several friends who have swallowed their own placenta pills and loved the benefits postpartum. The yoga studio I go to, my midwife, and our birthing instructor HIGHLY recommend doing it to help with bleeding, milk production, and to ward off postpartum depression and sleep disorders.  I have done a lot of reading up on this one and am excited that the University of Nevada, Las Vegas published a research article! They published an article recently detailing some of the findings of their study. One of the things they said was that women who were likely to practice this were "American, Caucasian, married, middle class, and college-educated and were more likely to give birth at home". Guess I fit the description perfectly.

9. I am not getting a diaper bag
I refuse. Not doing it. Can't make me. After talking to many second time moms I have heard repeatedly, "For the second you just get a big purse, throw in some diapers, a few clothes, and a snack and call it a day". I cannot carry anything over one shoulder because my chiro told me it will pull on my neck and cause my atlas to go out of alignment more quickly. I have to either carry a bag/purse in the crook of my elbow or wear a backpack. In the interest of not being a bag lady carrying three bags and a baby, I wanted something that would be a purse/diaper bag combo. There are some cute diaper bag backpacks out there but they are way to big to be a cute "purse" or they are uncomfortable because they have thin straps that dig in to my shoulders. I finally found this amazing backpack purse at REI and am obsessed. I plan to throw a few baby essentials in my new "purse" and keep another backpack with reinforcements in the car.

10. I am nervous about how my relationship with John will change
This one is a confession I think most normal couples go through. I am worried that I will give more attention to our baby than to my husband and he will feel "left out". I am anticipating that when John spends time with our son at home I will feel neglected. Mostly I am very content with our relationship right now and didn't feel like anything was "missing" or that a baby would "complete our relationship". I have heard from several people that everything changes but everything is better. I guess this next season of life with be a great opportunity for us to find a new stride and to trust God with the rest.

Free Breast Pump!

I was able to obtain a FREE breast pump with my insurance company! It is in the mail as I am typing and I am SOOO EXCITED!  Want to get your own free pump too? Keep reading and get your free pump and brag about it too! This cow machine should arrive by next Friday:

I am not returning to work outside of the home and do not plan on bottle feeding breast milk as the main means of feeding my child, but if there is a FREE pump out there to be had YOU BET I'm going to get it. I plan to use it for occasional use, like  when I need to be away from our son for a few hours for an Advocare event or when John and I go away over night for some special "us" time.

I wanted to share with you the steps I took so that if any other mamas are looking into this they can save themselves a bunch of time, energy, and effort. I read a few blog posts and forums before starting the process but wanted to let you in on some time saving techniques. Please let me know if anyone is able to use this information to help themselves get a free pump!

Please share info and blog post with ANY friend you know who is pregnant! America has one of the lowest breastfeeding rates in the world, let's change this! With access to free pumps I hope more women will make the choice to feed their baby breast milk, even if they are unable to exclusively feed from their breast due to going back to work. There is an awesome kickstarter documentary movie coming out next year called The Milky Way regarding this issue. Check out their trailer, I know I can't wait!

Background on WHY you are entitled to a free pump:
The Affordable Care Act was signed into law in 2010 under "Obamacare". There are many parts of the ACA, but one of the most boob-mazing parts is that ACA requires health plans to cover breastfeeding support and sometimes supplies. Free stuff for the milky mamas! If you have a private insurance carrier or commercial insurer, this law applies to you. If you are pregnant or have a child you nurse this applies to you! Currently this law does not cover Medicaid or WIC. If you want to read more click here for a article.

So how do you do it? Here are some steps with tips.

1. Get a prescription
I got mine from my midwife at 35 weeks but you can get it sooner. Make sure the prescription has these things:
  • Full name of yourself
  • Full name of your Dr. or Midwife
  • Contact info for your Dr. or Midwife (phone and address)
  • NPI# of your Dr. or Midwife
  • License# of your Dr. or Midwife
  • Specify the type of pump. Mine says "electric double breast pump", the highest grade. Downgrading is always an option but upgrading is difficult if it is not written on the prescription

2. Call your insurance company
This is important! Call them for several reasons. Firstly to check your benefits. Ask questions and WRITE down the answers. Also ask for the person's name and their employee ID# so that when you call back you can ask to be put on the phone with them again instead of another random person. These are some questions you should ask:
  • What type of pump can I get? Manual, electric, double electric, hospital grade, rental?
  • What is the maximum amount you cover?
  • What brands do you cover?
  • Can I get the pump before my baby is born, or do I have to wait until delivery?
  • What if I want a different pump from what's covered?
  • Can you send me a list of in-network DME or pump providers?
2. Figure out what pump you want and go to their website.
I wanted a double electric pump, specifically a Medela pump with two phase expression. There are a bunch of leading brands out there! I didn't care what the pump looked like or how it would transport. If you go to Medela's website you can look and see if your insurance will cover their pumps! If you know the type of pump you want after calling your insurance it will help you figure out if you are willing to pay a little extra to get that pump. Read reviews of pumps and figure out what will work for you. Here are some pump websites:

3. Contact a Supplier from the list of in-network providers.
  • Have your insurance information handy and a scan a PDF version or your prescription.
  • I figured out that any of the DME's I could drive to do NOT supply breast pumps because they are not a priority item. This means that I had to order a pump through a supplier that was contracted through my insurance company. Medela listed two providers that work with my insurance company and I called both of them.
  • Put your eggs in a few baskets with suppliers! One of them might be out of the pump you want or they might not be contracted with the pump company you want even though they are contracted through your insurance. Another issue is wait time. Ask when they will ship out your pump and what the estimated wait is.
  • Usually when you call they will create a customer account for you and they will give you an account #. WRITE THIS DOWN! They will usually ask you to email or fax your prescription information after they verify your benefits with your insurance company.
  • ALWAYS ask an estimate of how long each step will take and if you don't hear back from them CALL. Usually they don't purousfully not call you back, they are just busy. I called every day for four days to see what the status of my order was.
  • Here are some common suppliers MOST insurance companies work with:

Gluten-Free Dairy-Free Holiday Baking!

I really wanted to do a holiday baking roundup of the things we have been loving this year for gluten-free dairy-free treats! I have a link for each of the original recipes (the photos and skeleton recipes are credits of the original authors).

These are things I have made MULTIPLE times and we absolutely love. They all pass the hubby test and they all contain a surprising ingredient that makes them MUCH healthier than their traditional counterparts. Some of the items I change the amounts of certain ingredients (usually decrease sugar or sub for agave). Click on the item title for the original baker's recipe. Enjoy!

These are my secret weapon for the salty/sweet craving. The salt brings out the coconut flavor in amazing ways! I usually scale it back and make 1/4 a batch. Coconut oil is so much better than butter, and no high-fructose corn syrup in these bad boys! Just agave!

Ingredients(makes about 16 bars):
  • 2 cups unsweetened coconut flakes
  • 1/3 cup liquid sweetener (agave, maple syrup, honey etc.)
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 7.5oz bittersweet chocolate, melted (a little under 1 cup if using baking chips)
Directions:
  1. Mix together the unsweetened coconut, liquid sweetener, and salt. Toss until it’s entirely and evenly coated.
  2. Add in the powdered sugar and mix again.
  3. Melt the coconut oil or butter if it’s not already in a soft state and add that in and mix.
  4. Using the area between your 4 fingers and palm, mold the coconut mixture into a cylinder about 2 inches long and 1 inch thick.
  5. Put these onto a lined baking tray and freeze for 10 minutes or so until they harden.
  6. While the middles are freezing, melt the chocolate over a double boiler or in the microwave to a soft and smooth consistency.
  7. One at a time, roll the coconut fillings in the chocolate until they’re completely covered and put them on a wire rack to dry. Repeat for all of the coconut centers.
  8. Store in a container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
This cake is to DIE for. Seriously is a life saver when there is no GF flour to make a cake for a special occasion because it uses real life BEANS! It is high protein and high fiber because of the eggs, beans, and coconut flour.  We also love this cake without frosting and with my mom's homemade fig jam.

Add to food processor:
  • 2 cups cooked white beans, room temperature, so they don't cook the eggs (I made mine myself by soaking dry white beans overnight. In the morning I rinsed them well, and cooked them.)
  • 6 eggs
  • 3/4 tsp vanilla liquid stevia (do not measure over the batter, just in case it spills out)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup honey

Puree well.

Add:
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil, liquified
  • 1/3 cup coconut flour, sifted
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1.5 tsp baking powder

Puree well.

Pour into a round cake pan lined with  parchment paper on the bottom, and greased all around.

Bake at 325 degrees for about 30 minutes. (I like to check to see if it's done by inserting a knife into the middle. If it's comes out mostly clean, it's done.) Bake for about 22 minutes for cupcakes.

Frosting:
Melt over double boiler:
  • 1.5 bars of 3.2 oz dark chocolate (about 3/4 cup of chocolate chips)
  • 3/4 cup whole fat coconut milk

When the chocolate has just barely melted, remove from heat.

Add:
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 10 drops liquid stevia
  • 2 to 4 tbsp coconut flour, sifted.
Refrigerate until the frosting has cooled, about 15 minutes. (You know it's ready when it is the texture of frosting.)

When the cake has cooled fully, top the cake with the frosting.

These won't last long in your house. They are a great little treat for a late night cookie hankering when you don't want to bother with making a bunch of things in a bunch of bowls. The store well too and freeze great! The garbanzo beans add lots of fiber without the carb load of gluten-free flours. another great post-workout snack to grab between meals!
The Original Grain-free Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bites - no flour, no oil and no white sugar! Quick, easy, and gooey with a surprise ingredient! | texanerin.com

Ingredients

  • 1¼ cups canned chickpeas, well-rinsed and patted dry with a paper towel
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ½ cup + 2 tablespoons natural peanut butter, SunButter Natural or almond butter - room temperature
  • ¼ cup  honey, agave, or maple surup
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • a pinch of salt if your peanut butter doesn't have salt in it
  • ½ cup  chocolate chips (dairy free)

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Combine all the ingredients, except for the chocolate chips, in a food processor and process until very smooth. Make sure to scrape the sides and the top to get the little chunks of chickpeas and process again until they're combined.
  2. Put in the chocolate chips and stir it if you can, or pulse it once or twice. The mixture will be very thick and sticky.
  3. With wet hands, form into 1½" balls. Place onto a Silpat or a piece of parchment paper. If you want them to look more like normal cookies, press down slightly on the balls. They don't do much rising.
  4. Bake for about 10 minutes. The dough balls will still be very soft when you take them out of the oven. They will not set like normal cookies.
  5. Store in an airtight container at room temperature (or in the fridge) for up to 1 week.
Don't go through the holidays without giving this a try. What could be better than disguising tofu in a pumpkin pie? Protein packed and super tasty when cold, this is a great pie to bring to a party! We love it with honey on top. If you don't have ingredients to make the crust I have also made it without the crust so it is more of a hard custard.

Dairy-Free, Gluten-Free Pumpkin Pie
Crust
Ingredients:
  • 3/4 cup GF flour blend flour
  • 1/2 cup arrowroot powder or cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup almond meal
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 3 T olive oil or other oil
  • 3-4 T filtered water
Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F, and brush a 9-inch pie pan lightly with olive oil.
  2. Combine the dry ingredients and whisk together.
  3. In a small bowl, combine the 3 T olive oil and 3 T filtered water and whisk with a fork.
  4. Pour the oil/water mixture into the dry ingredients and stir.  It will be very dry and crumbly.  Add a bit more water, 1 tsp at a time, until you can make a ball out of the dough.
  5. On a floured surface, flatten the ball with your hands and either roll it with a rolling pin or press into the pie pan with your fingers.
  6. Once you have the crust shaped into the pie pan, take a fork and prick the bottom of the crust and use the tines to press the edges (you might have to dip it into some warm water to keep it from sticking).
  7. Bake the crust for 3 minutes, then fill it and finish baking.

Pumpkin Pie Filling

Ingredients:
  • 1/2 package silken tofu
  • 2 cups canned or cooked fresh pumpkin
  • 1/3 cup agave nectar
  • 1 tsp gluten-free vanilla
  • 1-1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 3/4 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
 Directions:
  1. Blend the tofu in a food processor until smooth and creamy, about 2 minutes.
  2. Blend the pumpkin along with the tofu (you may have to do this in portions, depending on the size of your food processor).
  3. Add the honey, vanilla and spices, and mix thoroughly.
  4. Pour into the prepared pie shell and bake at 400 degrees F for one hour.
  5. Cover with aluminum foil for the first half hour of the baking time.
  6. You can tell it is done if you stick a toothpick in it and it comes out clean.
  7.  Cool and serve.

Ingredients
  • 3 cups peanut butter
  • 3 cups brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons vanilla
  • 6 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 3 cups old fashioned oats
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  2. In another bowl, toss the oats with the baking soda and salt.
  3. Mix the dry ingredients into the wet and then stir in the chocolate chips.
  4. Place scoops of the dough (about 2 heaping tablespoons) onto a prepared baking sheet or one covered with a silicone mat or parchment paper. Bake 10 to 13 minutes, or until the edges of the cookies just begin to brown. Cool on a wire rack and keep in an airtight container.

Bump Updates + Maternity Shoot

Our dear little son is 35 weeks in womb age! I can't believe how fast this thing has flown by, it seems like only yesterday since we were squealing at a positive pregnancy test. Here are some updates:

1. We have maternity pictures! My sister Hope took them for us, scroll down to see her amazing photography!

2.  I look like a pregnant repairman. Yep, I bought a pregnacy belt. This little guy sticks our so far and I have been having so much pressure when I walk that I gave in a few weeks ago and went to Motherhood Maternity. I love it!! Seriously am so thankful I just jumped on it. I really notice a difference when I use it and when I forget.

3. I still think I rock at TRX. I feel like a super star because I am still able to "beat" the 60-year-olds in my class. I love the total body workout and the sweat, I just can't do any single-leg isolation. I wish I wish I could swim but my boy flipped from head down to transverse at 32 weeks (then back to head down three days later) so I am nervous as all heck to get in the water.  Maybe I will try it, he likes it when I am in the hot tub and in the bath so we will see.

4. I got mad props from my midwife. She was very pleased that I know exactly where our little dude is hanging out inside me. I can feel his back, butt, legs, and feet thanks to the belly mapping techniques my friend Steph turned me onto. As I am typing I can tell he is in the LOT position, same one he has been in since 33ish weeks. My baby has his back leaning into my left, he is head down, and he is facing my right hip and kicking my upper right abdomen!

5. Our home visit it next week! Our midwife, her partner midwife, and their student midwife are all coming to our home next Tuesday (unless someone else goes into labor) to have our home visit! They will make sure we have all the supplies on our list and familiarize themselves with our little home. We need to do a trial run of our birth pool before they come, so this weekend I get a FULL sized bath to soak in! I am super excited about the possibility of a big bath, I might just leave the pool up and use it to take a few baths where my belly doesn't protrude up out of the water.

On to our maternity photo shoot!! My sister Hope has a busy photography business, and did I mention she is only 19? She is amazing and I am so blessed to have such an awesome sister who is willing to put up with my silly poses. She goes to school in Santa Barbara if anyone ever wants to support her business and get some rockin' photos. Here is her facebook page if you like what you see and what to see more of her amazing work! Photos by Hope Photography are copyrighted 2013.

Thankfulness

During this season I wanted to take some time to think about a few things in my life for which I am truly thankful. I might have missed the blogging boat on Thanksgiving but I say better late than never!

Friends
I am so thankful for my friends who celebrated my baby shower with me. There were people from multiple stages in my life who took the time to shower me with so much love. My mom and sisters traveled via plane and train, my childhood friend Robin and her mom traveled from Seattle, John's family drove from Orange county, and so many more girls who live in San Diego came as well! I am so thankful for my friends Stephanie and Danielle who threw the shower for me and put so much time and dedication to making the day AMAZING. I truly feel blessed!

 Family
I had such an amazing time with my family this Thanksgiving in Cayucos, just north of Cal poly SLO. My parents rented a house close to the beach and we had a blast playing cranium, cards, eating way too much great food, and playing on the beach. Some of the fam even decided to try out surfing in the freezing ocean! My mom and sister are both gluten-free and dairy-free and our Thanksgiving dinner was perfect because I could eat pretty much everything! Can you say bacon-garlic brussels sprouts? Mmmm.

We exchanged Christmas gifts and it was so fun to give and receive! For the third year in a row my family has done alternative gifts. The rules are that you can't buy anything that has a price tag on it. You may regift, repourpose, create, or score at a garage sale or thrift store.  I love it! My mom made us a baby quilt for our little guy that I can't stop ogling over and admiring. One of the things we made for my family (among other items) was a mobility peanut since pretty much everyone is an athlete in my family and gets tight backs.

The Hubby
I am so thankful for my husband and I can't believe I get to spend each and every day with him! He has been such a help during my pregnancy and is always checking in with me to see how I am doing. The thing I am most thankful for is the closeness and connection we have developed over the past five years of marriage. It sure hasn't been easy and most of it has been hard work to fight for our marriage and for our time together to be meaningful. The past three evenings we have had such amazing conversations about the tough stuff that we are experiencing surrounding the idea of bringing a new little baby into our family. True vulnerability is raw, not very pretty, and exposing but OH SO WORTH IT. I am so thankful for John and his willingness to initiate a deepening of our relationship. We are able to let down our guards with each other and expose our true selves. We are excited about this little guy but also mourning the loss of our "two-ness" and the fact that things are going to be different.

The other thing I am so thankful for is the playfulness we have! I bought mistletoe and it cracks me up to see John standing under it with a big grin when I come in from another room. Laughter is the glue when things might not be going as smoothly as we had hoped.

This is a sneak peek of out maternity shoot, a gift from my sister Hope!
